A project for Isabel Ramirez, a young Mayan girl, has made a significant difference in her life, thanks to the Rotary Club of the State of Jefferson — Rotary District 5110’s first and only eClub.
Soon after chartering in 2013, eClub chose basic education and literacy as its area of focus and launched a signature project, “Let’s Leave No Girl Behind.” The project has grown from providing Spanish-Mayan dictionaries and computers to a school in remote western Guatemala to the sponsorship of two Mayan girls to attend middle and high school in Maya Jaguar Technical Center. Most Mayan girls are often married off as early as age 12 by their impoverished families.
Recently, the Rotary Club of Jefferson watched with pride the high school graduation of Isabel, who graduated with top academic honors and first in her computer class. With a solid secondary education, Isabel now has real opportunities for gainful employment or continuing university studies.
