Rotary works in many different ways toward a more peaceful world. These include various exchange programs, our Peace Fellow’s program and the District’s Peace Conference, Sept. 21 in Ashland, OR. This year’s world-class event, titled “You are the Flame: Practical Applications of the Culture of Peace,” is gaining global attention.
Sponsored by the Ashland Culture of Peace Commission and the Rotary E-Club of World Peace, the district conference will bring together notable speakers including:
- Ambassador Anwarul K. Chowdhury, Former Under-Secretary General of the United Nations and Founder of the Global Movement for the Culture of Peace,
- Kia Scherr, Co-Founder, One Life Alliance. After her husband and 13-year-old daughter were killed in the Mumbai terrorist attack of 2008. Kia co-founded One Life Alliance, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating peace education programs for schools, business and government, and
- Saul Arbess, Director of the Canadian Peace Initiative, Co-founder and Chairman of the Global Alliance for Ministries and Departments of Peace working in concert with other countries to form departments of peace in all nations.
The Ashland event precedes a global peace conference Jan. 17-18 in Ontario, CA. “But why wait and go that far,” asks Rotarian Chuck Root, “Join us, instead, in southern Oregon.
