PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

“The Future of Rotary is in Your Hands”. This is the Rotary theme for 2009-10. When Rotary was formed over 100 years ago by business and professional leaders coming together with the idea of giving service back to the community. The outcome then and now has been in the hands of the individuals and not the organization. The theme is appropriate today in that it recognizes each Rotarians responsibility of service to others.

Southtowne Rotarians have exemplified this theme for over 30 years by their efforts in both the local community and the world at large. On this web site is information on a number of our current projects. We encourage your review and if interested to please contact us.

We meet each Thursday noon at the VETS Club on Willamette Street in Eugene. Visitors are always welcome.

Eugene Southtowne Rotary is a diverse group of individuals committed to the accomplishment of common aims. We are looking to increase our membership by 10 percent to enlarge the pool of volunteers within our family. As with any organization there is temptation for some to simply be a passenger and go along for the ride, but we are looking for dedicated souls willing to give much more than they will take from their efforts. The rewards are found in our fellowship and the satisfaction of helping those in need. We exist to serve others. This year we will continue to work hard to address child abuse prevention and treatment by supporting the Rotary Duck Race. We are assembling a team to go to Colima, Mexico, to aid local villagers through Project Amigo. Our club has gained honor and recognition with our stove projects in Guatemala, El Salvador, and Uganda, and we will continue to support these and other world community service projects. Eugene will benefit from a local pond cleanup project being organized for next spring, and we will continue other efforts to enhance the well-being of our youth and local community. We will give recognition to deserving members in our club and community, including a new annual recognition award for outstanding accomplishments by individuals in our police and fire departments. The Southtowne Foundation will continue to fund scholarships for deserving students. We are sponsoring youth exchange activities this year with an inbound student from Russia and our outbound student in Argentina. Above all, we will strive to communicate more effectively within our community the importance of supporting Rotary International, and in particular, the efforts of The Rotary Foundation to eradicate polio worldwide. We help ourselves by helping others.
